Cadmium Yellow
Cadmium Yellow

I did a cadmium yellow background for one of the large Annunciation paintings I did a few years ago which worked well. I guess yellow is about hope and joy, and is probably appropriate for the "king" who is toppling…Read more >

Creating Colour Composition

I'm currently creating colour composition. Sorting out value, saturation and intensity. Also working in cool, dark and less intense colour, which make a nice contrast to the dominant warm colours…Read more >

Drawing Life From Retro Dolls
Drawing Life From Retro Dolls

Rosalee Firth Melbourne artist documents a painting in progress from start to finish. Here we see the second painting for 'King of the Hill' coming together.

A New King
A New King

Drawing and painting can be hard work! I've been trying to draw the animals under the doll figure, but just can't get it right, if the drawing doesn't work I'll just start painting.

It's Playtime! New Friends
It's Playtime! New Friends

This week in the studio, new “people” arrived via the post. A kangaroo, two bears, a horse, two cows, two dogs and a piglet. All ready to have their portraits done. I began with the smaller bear then added him to the pile under the “King of the Hill”.

Professionally Photographing Artwork
Professionally Photographing Artwork

There are quite a few steps involved in photographing a large artwork. Jesse Corcoran, photographer is here in the studio, read about the Top 3 Steps to achieve a professional photo that is ‘all in focus’ not just the ‘centre’.

Finishing A Painting
Finishing A Painting

Week 5 in the Studio, I've nearly finished the large painting of King of the Hill, but have so much more that I want to explore. While the paint has been drying, I've been working on my animal figures, they await new prosthetics.

A Little Digital Help
A Little Digital Help

My fourth Monday in the studio: I've been considering the background, with some digital help and, my "King of the Hill" sketchbook has been sent to the Brooklyn Art Library in New York.

Building Colour and Form
Building Colour and Form

This week I’ve been building colour and form in the figures at the bottom of the heap and starting to consider the figure on top.

Dogs were everywhere in Rome and just had to be sketched. Peeing on ancient monuments, waiting patiently for their owners in the shade of beautiful stone archways, or hoping for a pat.
